Maps you will use in Morkin

Hello there!

In Morkin: The Lords of Midnight Solo Adventurethere are two maps: one hexagonal, covering the western part of Midnight, which you will use for most of the game, and another, which we’ll discuss later, where you will create the dungeons you explore.

On the hexagonal map, each hex represents approximately two miles of terrain. As shown in the image, it features mountains, hills, forests, and various types of structures.

In Morkin, you have a limited number of days to complete your mission—finding and destroying the Ice Crown, the artefact forged by Doomdark that keeps all of Midnight enslaved in an icy terror, clouding the minds of its people. Each day is divided into quarters (with the last being night), and in each quarter, you may perform one action from a variety of options, including hunting, foraging, fishing, resting, investigating, camping, and travelling. The resolution of each action is determined by a dice roll (D100), your character’s skills, and a set of success and failure tables.

Additionally, each hex may contain encounters with Doomdark’s forces or trigger events—there are approximately 150, which depend on the terrain type and a D66 table.

If, instead of being outdoors, you are inside a structure (village, keep, citadel, tower, snowhall, ruin, cave, lake, henge, lith…) or at a Special Site (there are 12 on the map), there are unique events or available actions specific to each location.

Another game mode is included: the blank hexagonal map. In this mode, you create the map as you explore, using a series of terrain and structure tables.

When you reach ruins or caves, you may choose to explore them. In such cases, you move to a separate sheet where you can draw the rooms as you discover them, marking doors, door’s status, staircases to other levels, secret passages, and more.

The dungeon sheet also includes various tables to add atmosphere to each room. Naturally, each area may contain encounters, events, or valuable items to uncover.

Dungeons have a unique feature: each one has an associated quest. This means that when you decide to explore a dungeon, you already have a specific objective in mind—rescuing prisoners, defeating an Ice Troll that is terrorising the region, recovering a stolen artefact, and so on. There are 66 available quests, determined by rolling a D66.

Morkin is a table-top, solo-player game inspired by The Lords of Midnight, the strategy and adventure epic fantasy game created by Mike Singleton and first released for the ZX Spectrum in 1984. The Lords of Midnight is often ranked among the greatest role-playing and strategy games of the 1980s.

You will step into the role of Morkin as he embarks on his quest to destroy the Ice Crown. Played on a hexagonal map, the game blends role-playing elements with strategic exploration and adventure. All you will need to play Morkin is the book, a pencil, eraser, a few dice and your imagination.
